Oppo A53 Review: A budget smartphone for the binge-watcher in you

Oppo A53 is the company's latest offering under the A-series for the Indian smartphone market. Priced under Rs 15,000, the budget smartphone goes against the likes of Redmi and Realme, which are quite popular in this segment, courtesy of the value-for-money offering. While the Oppo A53 may not be the champ in terms of on-paper specifications, the company has paid some attention to those tiny aspects that help improve the overall user experience. We have used the smartphone for a few days and in our Oppo A53 review, we will let you know if you should consider buying the smartphone under Rs 15,000.

Phone overview

Oppo silently announced its latest Oppo A53 smartphone. It comes with a 5000 mAh battery, as well as an aggressive price tag for its budget specs and features. It arrives in three colors – Fairy White, Electric Black, and Fancy Blue. There are two price tags for the A53 in Kenya as well for the different memory variants. It costs Appro. Ksh 19,000 for the 64GB version and 21,500 shillings for the 128 GB version.

90Hz refresh rate

As a general rule, each year in the smartphone industry sees a new hyped feature. Just to explain what I mean, take the selfie camera for example. First, it was within a bezel, then we say notches, hole punch, and even pop up selfie cameras. And in 2020 the battle seems to be not only with the display but also their refresh rates. And the A53 also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection before I get ahead of myself here.

Oppo A53

The 90Hz refresh rate of Oppo A53 is something to talk about, surely it is. As a matter of fact, the A53 is the first Oppo smartphone (at this price point) to feature a higher than the normal 60Hz rate. Now 90 Hz refresh rate (see also Infinix Zero 8) is the refresh rates at which the image redraws on the screen. Displays with a 90Hz refresh rate render images 90 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the lesser is the motion blur, and the better the image quality.

Still focusing on the display, Oppo A53 comes with a big and bright 6.5 inches IPS LCD display panel. Look, dear reader, I cannot even get over the fact that it is a 90Hz refresh rate. Seriously, Oppo has entered the A – league here. But moving on, this panel does not disappoint when it comes to the resolution. We see a rather low 720 x 1600 pixels resolution with 270 PPI density. We’re thinking a compromise had to be made. And you will also notice the hole punch wherein the selfie camera lies.

Okay, the chipset Oppo A53 comes with is a rather dated Qualcomm SM4250 Snapdragon 460 (11 nm) chip. This is the same chip that integrates the Adreno 610 GPU and features an X11 LTE modem supporting Cat 13 uplink and Cat 12 downlink. I honestly think when it comes to the performance then we would rather appreciate the fact that the Oppo A53 comes with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM which is quite generous yes? The same also has either 128GB of internal storage otherwise 64GB.

Still, under the hood is an Octa-core (4×1.8 GHz Kryo 240 & 4×1.6 GHz Kryo 240) CPU. The phone itself is powered by Android 10, with ColorOS 7.2. Now OPPO’s ColorOS 7.2 brings a range of innovative, easy to use features. And speaking of innovation, you will also appreciate the design of Oppo A53 which the company speaks of in this way. “Skillfully pleated for texture, and inspired by the shining, translucent glimmer of ocean waves, see the brilliant reflection of prismatic colors of light” – website.

Oppo A53 is an affordable smartphone with a triple camera setup. It comes with a 13MP main wide camera lens. This lens has an Auto-focus feature. Next is a 2 MPf/2.4, (macro) a 2MP depth sensor. This is not all. And I think I may have been mistaken when I say it has three cameras. It has yet another. Oppo A53 has an impressive 16 MP shooter capable of shooting [email protected] videos just like the main 13MP lens. And in case you are wondering, a depth-sensing lens will come in handy when you want to blur the background of a portrait image.

Battery and more

Oppo A53 has a non-removable Li-Po 5000 mAh battery able to last up to two days of mixed usage. The best thing about it is that it does indeed support fast charging 18W via 2.0, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector. More features include a loudspeaker, 3.5mm jack, a fingerprint scanner (rear-mounted), Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. You may also like Oppo A72 5G.

Oppo A53 review: Display - Oppo A53 has a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD upfront. The screen has an average brightness of 480 nits, which is just good enough for outdoor conditions but you may want to keep it to full for a better viewing experience. Colours are well saturated and the temperature too is on the neutral side of the spectrum. The screen also refreshes 90 times per second, which means you will have a smooth experience while scrolling through your social feed or while playing games that support a high refresh rate. Oppo A53 is the most-affordable smartphone currently in the segment to offer a 90Hz display. The next-best offering is Realme 6 which starts at RS 13,999 at the time of writing this. You get an almost all-screen experience on the Oppo A53 with an 89.2 percent screen-to-body ratio and a punch-hole notch. The chin is reasonably thick compared to the sides and the top bezel.
